Dr Vijaya Lakshmi Karanam

Vijaya is a consultant obstetrician at the Royal Women’s Hospital, Melbourne, and Honorary senior lecturer at Melbourne University. She qualified as a doctor in India and after completing her Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology worked for few years in India before moving to the UK. She successfully completed postgraduate qualification (MRCOG) in 2005 and completed her training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the UK. High risk pregnancy management was always her interest. However, after developing pre-eclampsia in her pregnancy, her interest became a passion. She did her PhD on the subject ‘Maternal tissue perfusion and hypoxia regulated genes in pre-eclampsia and IUGR’ from Kingston University, London. She moved along with her family to Australia in 2019 and since been involved in various quality improvement projects. She is a clinical researcher, and her areas of interest are pregnancy complications mainly pre-eclampsia, fetal growth restriction, still birth, gestational diabetes, recurrent miscarriages and perinatal mental health. She believes in health equity and involved in global health projects focussed on improving maternal and child health.
